About Tap to Pay on iPhone
Tap to Pay on iPhone is a contactless payment acceptance solution developed by Apple. With Tap to Pay on iPhone and Nexxtap, you can accept payments right on your iPhone — from physical debit and credit cards to Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. No additional hardware required.
Tap to Pay on iPhone is a capability developed by Apple. Nexxtap enables you to use it within the Nexxtap app.
Before you begin
Make sure your setup meets the following requirements:
- You have an iPhone XS or newer. Tap to Pay on iPhone is not available on iPad.
- Your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS.
- Your iPhone's Date & Time is set to automatic (Settings > General > Date & Time).
- A passcode is set on your iPhone (Settings > Face ID & Passcode).
- You have a stable internet connection. Offline payments are not supported.
- You are signed in to your Apple ID on your iPhone.
Note: If you use a phone case that holds physical cards, remove them before taking payments to avoid accidentally charging your own card.
Set up Tap to Pay on iPhone
Sign in to your iPhone and set a passcode
Go to Settings > Sign in to your iPhone if you haven't already. To add a passcode, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
Enable Tap to Pay on iPhone in Nexxtap
- Open the Nexxtap app
- Enter your merchant ID and name your device
- Activate by entering your Nexxtap Portal Password. Alternatively, you can activate within your portal.
- Tap Agree & Continue to activate Tap to Pay on iPhone.
Once enabled, all team members signed in under the same account with a compatible device will be able to use Tap to Pay on iPhone automatically.
Accept payments
For best results, the customer's card or NFC device should be held to the front of your iPhone near the Hold Here to Pay icon.
- In the Nexxtap app, enter the payment amount and tap Charge.
- Select Tap to Pay on iPhone as the payment method.
- Ask your customer to hold their contactless card or NFC device to the front of your iPhone.
- You'll hear an audible beep, followed by a spinning indicator while the payment processes.
- The payment is complete when a tick and the word Approved appears on screen.
Note: The payment is not confirmed until you see the approval screen. Do not assume a payment has gone through based on the beep alone.
Security best practices
- Never hand your iPhone to the customer. You hold the iPhone — ask your customer to tap their card or device to it.
- Wait for the spinning indicator and audible beep during processing. Only the approval screen confirms a successful payment.
- Review your transaction history in Nexxtap to confirm payments. Tap to Pay on iPhone transactions are recorded as card payments and show the card type and last four digits.
- Require a passcode to exit the payment screen — go to Settings > Security in Nexxtap and enable the passcode option for the customer-facing payment screen.
Troubleshooting
If you see a generic error message, check the following:
- Your iOS software is out of date — go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Your iPhone's Date & Time is not set to automatic.
- Your internet connection is unstable.
- The Nexxtap app was backgrounded during the Apple ID linking step. Force close and reopen the app, then complete the Apple ID linking without switching away.
Payment failed screen: If this appears, the customer has not been charged. For security reasons you cannot retry the same attempt — ask the customer to tap their card again to start a new transaction.
