In this article: How to create a product, import products in bulk, add variants and add-ons, and set SKU and product code.
Products are managed from Product Management in the Portal. This covers creating a single product, importing many at once, and the options a customer can choose at checkout.
1. Creating a product
It is recommended to set up categories and taxes first, so they're available to select while creating the product.
- Go to Product Management.
- Click Add Product.
- Enter the product's details.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Product name | How the product appears on the POS, receipts, and reports. |
| Base price | The product's price before any variant or add-on adjustments. |
| Image (optional) | Shown on the POS to help identify the product quickly. |
| Category | If the category has option lists assigned to it, those appear on the product automatically. See Option presets and categories. |
| Taxes | Which taxes apply to this product, set up in Tax Management. |
Click Create Product once the details are entered, or continue to the next section to add variants or add-ons first.
2. Variants and add-ons
Variants and Add-ons let a product have options a customer chooses at the point of sale, without needing to create a separate product for every combination.
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Variant | A variation of the product itself, for example size or colour. A customer select only one. |
| Add-on | An additional item on top of the product, for example toppings or extras. A customer can select more than one. |
- On the product, click Add Variant or Add-on.
- Name the list, for example "Size" or "Extras".
- Click Add Option to add each individual choice, with a name and an amount.
Leave the amount as 0 if the option doesn't change the price. If a product has multiple variants, for example both size and colour, a matrix lets you set the price for each combination rather than each variant individually.
Rather than building the same list on every product, it can be set up once as a reusable Option Preset instead. See Option presets and categories.
3. SKU and product code
SKU and Product Code are identifiers attached to a product, and to each of its variants. They can be set at both product and variant level, and edited from either the app or the Portal.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Product Code | Used as the lookup number when scanning a barcode. Scanning a code searches products and variants for a match. |
| SKU | An identifier attached to the product and each variant, alongside the Product Code. |
4. Importing products via CSV
Products can be created in bulk using a CSV file, rather than adding them one at a time.
- Go to Product Management and click Create Products.
- Download the product_template.csv file provided.
- Fill in the template.
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | Product name. |
| Category_name | Name of the category. Creates the category if it doesn't already exist. |
| Base_price | Base price of the product. |
| Description | Product description. |
| Taxes | Matches a tax name from Tax Management. |
| Attribute_name | Name of a variant or add-on list. Up to four can be included. |
| Attribute_options | Format Option:Amount, for example Small:10. |
| Attribute_allow_multiple | Use TRUE for an Add-on, FALSE for a Variant. |
- Upload the completed file using the Import CSV function.
